Delta Day Adventure

Jeff took a Saturday to go down heli-skiing in Valdez, and the snow in the Deltas looked sweet on the way down, so that night we met near McCallum Creek, and headed out the next morning from the Arctic Man parking lot in search of some close-to-the-road schralping

Heli-skiing looked pretty sweet

From the Arctic Man parking lot looking at the Gulkana Glacier. Turns out the mountains are way closer from here than most other places we've been in the Deltas.

There was a significant amount of snowmelt, so we had to bootpack some of the way

We climbed up to the first little bump on a ridge between the Gulkana and McCallum Glaciers. The spine of the ridge afforded a pretty solid climb without any too-intense inclines

I'm the little speck on the ridge

Jeff schralping our way descent. We only had enough time for one downhill, but it was pretty sweet. A little icy, with 3 inches of corn baked by the sun

Why yes, yes it does

Triangle Trip

We went on an Alaska Alpine Club trip down to the Deltas at the beginning of April, trying to climb Triangle Peak, one of the more popular climbs in the Deltas.

The ski in was in whiteout conditions most of the way.

When the clouds cleared, though, the view was sweet and the conditions were awesome - a foot of fresh powder blanketed the glacier

Snow falling at night.

Sweet little ice wall on the glacier

We didn't end up getting to do the climb. The freshie turned out to be super unstable, and not very safe, so we just skied out. We got to make about five turns, though, which were sweet.
