Granite Tors Hike

In May I got some people together to hike the Granite Tors near Fairbanks. It's a 15 mile loop that starts and ends at the Chena River. Even in May there was enough snow that we got lost a couple of times when the trail was buried for 1,000 foot stretches. It's a pretty sweet little hike, though.

Frankie's dog Keys sniffing around a stream near the bottom of the hike.

Sam and Frankie on the climb up. There's a 3,000 foot elevation gain, most over a few miles close to the start of the hike.

Frankie eating her lunch. She actually brought more food and water for her dog for herself. Notice the burnout in the background.

In search of adventure.

Me on top of one of the Tors. The trail is named for these granite formations that were formed when volcanic activity effectively pushed columns of rock up through the earth. Some of the columns can be up to 100 feet in height, and the area is often frequented by climbers.

Here's a good view from the Tors.

And another...I like the perspective this one gives.
